Glenelg Gorge

The Glenelg river flows into the see at Nelson, near the Victoria border with South Australia. Nelson is the western turning point of the Great South West Walk, which follows down the Glenelg River and through the gorge just upstream. We did a short out and back walk through the gorge, dodgeing rain.

Cape Nelson

Cape Nelson is one of the headlands near Portland in Victoria which we visited in April 2022 on a road trip to Victoria. It was named in December 1800 by Lieutenant James Grant after his ship HMS Lady Nelson. It was also the most southern point of Major Thomas Mitchell’s journey “Australia Felix” in 1836.

We visited a couple of places on Cape Nelson as a day trip. There is plenty more left to see. Part of the tracks here are on the Great Southwest Walking Track.
